I enjoy cartoons from other countries because they give me insight into the cultures. These cartoons are of interest, because they are cartoons done by Americans living in Japan. The advantage is that I can read them, because they are in English and I can understand at least half of the reference points - the perspectives of Americans. The drawback is that the culture is represented through foreign eyes, rather than through their own eyes. This makes them different in perspective than, for insta [...]

Wow, Roger Dahl (no relation I believe), got a job as a cartonist with the Japan Times with these occasionally insightful, but characterless cartoons depicting the 'fish out of water' nature of the foreigner expat's lot in Tokyo. I must guess this was a 'best of', purporting to collect together the gems from a long running comic strip. There is an occasional chuckle to be had, but the artwork is pretty undistinguished and generic. I expected much better. It is a pretty quick skim though.

A collection of Roger Dahl's long-running comic strip "Zero Gravity" from The Japan Times, these black and white strips poke gentle fun at the absurdities of being a foreigner living in Tokyo. While I feel like I got the most of the humor since I've been to Japan, you don't need to be all that familiar to get most of the jokes, and I think it might even be a good low-key way to pick up on some bits and pieces of Japanese culture.

This is a collection of harmless "such is life" comics of the sort that appear in American Sunday newspapers. However, I really think one has to have lived in Japan to get a lot of these jokes. I'll freely admit to having no idea what several of the comics were referring to.

Surviving 2. Relationship 3. Work4. Language 5. Seasons6. Culture 7. Food, Shopping and Travel8. JunkoAnyway, I brought this comic book from the school library.
