Well I have just finished reading Vincent J. Pitts’ excellent book; “Henri IV of France: His Reign and Age”. I've had this book sitting in my library since 2009 and it turned out to be another one of those books that I am kicking myself for not picking it up and reading earlier. As usual I was distracted by something shiny and I missed a very enjoyable read by a few years.I didn’t know a lot about Henri IV other than what I had read in a few general histories of this period and from what [...]

Henri IV of France: His Reign and Age by Vincent J. Pitts unfolds chronologically towards the assassination of Henri IV in 1610 to emphasise it as key moment in the development of the French monarchy, as well the reigns importance in the transition from the Valois to the Bourbon dynasty. Henri’s apparent fickleness in religious matters was more a sleight of hand in ushering in religious tolerance, well before it was permissible anywhere else in Europe, so that France endured less than other st [...]

I've struggled to find works on the French Wars of Religion, so I was glad to find Pitts' biography (even if it recounts the wars through a single lens). I know far more about English medieval/Renaissance history than French history, so I appreciated Pitts' ability to tell Henry's story in a clear fashion--I was able to keep most of the people straight, even when their titles changed. Pitts was able to bring much of Henry's character into focus, but, paradoxically, there were parts of Henry's pe [...]

The French Wars of Religion are fascinating, and Henri IV was probably the central figure in the period, moving from persecuted Huguenot prince to the converted Catholic monarch who established peace. Pitts's biography is a solid, comprehensive academic study. My main issue with the book is that it takes the form of a breathless narrative, with inadequate pause for analysis. I think it could have actually used another 100 pages or so, particularly in the first half dealing with the civil wars, t [...]

This book made the French Wars of Religion more vivid to me because I saw it in relation to real lives (though mostly, of course, elite lives). I saw how conversion could become a political or economic issue. I saw how class played in (at times nobles being granted the right to have Huguenot services though no one else could). We'll never know if Henry IV converted out of belief or in a quest for power or in order to save "his" people from further civil war. We do know that he finally brought pe [...]

A very thorough biography of a very tragic man. I found myself getting bogged down at times, but on the whole this was a fine book.
